What is Your Four-minute Mile?

Find Your Perfect Career - Learn how to match your personality to the ideal job or career for you-risk free-$49.95

On May 6, 1954, Englishman Roger Bannister ran a mile in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds. He was the first person in history to verifiably run a mile in less than 4 minutes. At the time, the "four-minute barrier" was considered by many to be impenetrable. His record lasted only 46 days before it was broken again, and since then, 1,400 people have run a mile in less than four minutes.

The human body was physically capable of covering a mile in under 4 minutes prior to Roger Bannister's record-breaking run but no one had done so until he crossed the finish line in 1954. Once he'd done so, many others could, too. Why were so many suddenly able to run faster only after he had proven it can be done?

The answer is likely psychology. Many people block their own success by convincing themselves that something is too hard to accomplish or even impossible. Once Bannister proved it could be done, many others overcame that psychological four-minute barrier and did it, too.

Setting new records in athletics highlights the question we should all ask ourselves,

"What am I capable of achieving? Where am I most effective?"

Not everyone is capable of becoming an elite athlete. In fact, the perspective that we are in competition against everyone else can be detrimental in our effort to improve.

Each of us has a collection of mental or emotional barriers we feel are insurmountable. Sometimes we are fully aware of our capabilities and limitations (imagined or real) but more often we are unaware of our true strengths. Because of this, we pursue life paths that may not be compatible with our innate, unchanging nature.

Some people are runners. Others are communicators or innovators or leaders. Imagine how you would feel if you spent your life pursuing a career as a researcher but deep inside you have the right stuff to be a great leader?

Everyone has their own four-minute barrier. The first step to breaking through is identifying if the road you're running is aligned with your true self. Discover your innate, unchanging nature. Learn how you are hardwired. Once you've done that, once you have identified the race you are meant to run, you will discover something amazing.

You will discover your path of greatest happiness.

The first step is to take the psychometric assessment, or personality test, that has the highest repeat reliability rating of any on the market today, the Core Values Index.
